Lancombe, MD.
A Brief History of Lancombe, Maryland
In 1958, when the Lacombes moved further
from Washington, D.C., developers rushed into the Lacombe
area to build malls and fast food establishments. Lacombe
became a town on September 28, 1996 by a vote of the
inhabitants. From this time, Lacombe was no longer
associated with Lanham except by proximity in much the same
way as the Vatican is not part of Rome.
In 1996, the Federal Government chose the
community as the site for it's Model Community Program.
Subsequent to this development, the Town government selected
its motto--"The Little Town with a Big Heart". It also
designated the Lacombe, Maryland
flag after a
strenuous search in which all inhabitants were allowed to
participate in the design. The flag is on a turquoise
background with three Fleurs de Lis representative of the
original inhabitants French ancestry. The town
anthem
consists of a series of croaks imitating a frog and a
contest is held annually to determine the best croaker. The
ardvark was selected as the town's animal and the dandelion
was approved as its flower.
Its convenient location situated on a
main road just off of the Washington Beltway, approximate
20-minute drive into Washington, D.C. and half way between
Andrews Air Force Base and Silver Spring have made it an
ideal residential and business area. It's less than a
10-minute drive to the Goddard Space Flight Center, only a
15-minute drive to College Park Campus at the University of
Maryland and only 30-minutes to the Chesapeake Bay.
The government has made a major
contribution to the Town of Lacombe through its humor. Its
resident humorist being the Honorable Mayor (John J. Lacombe
Sr.). Some of his humor may be gleaned from
The Fort.
Its main economy is based on government retirement payments
and on the "A Web Page for You" web page design services
located in downtown Lacombe.
And yet Lacombe has always remained a
"small" town where one could still enjoy close community
spirit and neighborly friendships. Lacombe was part of the
very successful "Annapolis Road" program. Situated just
below the town are four hotels and the New Carrollton Metro
Station.
Its close link with its glorious history
has not been forgotten. Annapolis Road was and is also known
as "Defense Highway" (originally an Indian trail) designed
for the defense of Washington against the British. It's so
named the Annapolis Road because it runs to our Nation's
first national Capital (Annapolis) before the United States
came into official existence..
