Have you read the history of New Market,
MD? Well, here is a brief summary for your pleasure.
A Brief History of New Market, Maryland
On December 6, 1975, the U.S. Department
of the Interior registered the town of New Market, Maryland
as an Historic District. New Market is considered a fine
example of a small town that is a complete unit.
New Market can trace its history back more than two full
centuries. Founded and laid out in 1793 by William Plummer
and Nicholas Hall, New Market thrived by serving travelers
along the historic Old National Pike between Frederick and
Baltimore.
Early in the 19th century, high-wheeled six-horse Conestoga
wagons were frequent visitors to New Market as travelers
made their way to the Ohio country and beyond. In those
days, more than eight hotels and taverns lined Main Street.
The town offered travelers a night's lodging for 25c and a
glass of whisky for 5c. Behind the inns were barns and pens
for resting livestock being driven to Baltimore Markets.
In addition to the hotels and taverns, wheelwrights and
blacksmith shops were necessary and numerous. Industry was
restricted to the needs of travelers and the local farming
community. At one time, there was a tannery, button factory,
shoe factory and wrought iron nail shop. All are gone today,
but the old-time, small town flavor remains intact to
welcome today's travelers.
The new millennium begins and the historic circle makes a
full turn: today New Market, Maryland welcomes a new type of
sturdy traveler and bold adventurer: the crafts collector
and antiques hunter. Cars have replaced the Conestoga wagons
and antique shops have replaced blacksmith and wheelwright
shops. New Market now proudly boasts a
fine restaurant,
a bustling
General Store, an
art
gallery, a cozy bed and breakfast and a tearoom along
with more than 30 shops offering antiques to please even the
most discriminating tastes.
