A Brief History of Salisbury, Maryland
Salisbury's location at the head of Wicomico River was a
major factor in its becoming one of Maryland's outstanding
cities. After a rather slow start as one of Lord Baltimore's
colonial outposts, the navigable waterway leading out to the
Chesapeake Bay and beyond was the sole means of
transportation and communication for the brave and hardy
settlers. It was a virtual wilderness harking back to a
Stone Age culture that was awaiting them, with simple trails
made by the Native Americans for their simple needs.
The new official port of Salisbury in 1732 gradually became
a gateway to an ever-spreading area of colonists seeking
more land for homesteading. It was the so-called landing
that has grown to be second only to Baltimore as the most
active seaport in Maryland . With the continuing efforts to
deepen and widen the channel, huge tankers carrying oil and
barges loaded with stone for construction and grain for the
poultry industry ply up the river to Salisbury.
Geographically, Salisbury has been looked upon as being in a
central spot on the lower Eastern Shore . Even in the 1800s
its promoters and realtors had dubbed it: "THE HUB OF
DELMARVA" and similar logos. There were several plausible
reasons to justify this idea of being the center of things.
Besides the navigation aspect the mid-1800s saw the advent
of that wonder-of-wonders, the railroad, to Salisbury and
for a period during the Civil War it terminated here. From
its freight yards and passenger station an arterial
connection was made with the dynamic Northeast industrial
complex and the populous corridor stretching from Boston to
Baltimore. Any idea of isolation that had existed was then
erased with passenger service along with the creation of
markets for the produce, meats and grains of the local
farmers.
It was only a short time later that the trans-peninsular
railroad was established connecting Baltimore and the
Eastern Shore by a ferry system to meet a railroad running
from Claiborne in Talbot County eastward to Ocean City . And
not only was it the junction point with the North-South
lines, but it was also the operations center, the freight
yards and depot.
It was only natural that the population of Salisbury kept
growing along with business activities, such as banking,
merchandising with large stores and commercial activities in
general. Then came a hospital that grew steadily in size and
facilities to be a regional medical facility together with a
state college that has grown to be a recognized university.
When the automotive industry forged ahead in the 1900s with
the mass production of cars and trucks, the demand for
better roads brought on the construction of highways,
ranging from the federal interstate system to the local
streets and roads. The present U.S. Route 13, also known as
Ocean Highway, ran directly through Salisbury; when the
east-west Ocean Gateway, U.S. Route 50, was completed, it
also junctioned at Salisbury.
The old logo of Salisbury being "THE HUB OF THE EASTERN
SHORE" could not have been more appropriate after all!
To top off the on-going role of continuing growth in the
multiple fields of commerce and culture, the airport built
as part of the World War II military operations has been
expanded to become a regional terminal; the runways have
been extended and the facilities have kept pace with the
ever-increasing demands of the regional passenger and
freight service.
Much can be said about the industrial sector of the
community, with major corporations in many fields finding
Salisbury a favorable base for their operations. The Perdue
chicken operations, international in scope, began and
continues to call Salisbury its home base.
So as the 275th anniversary of a once small colonial outpost
approaches, there is now one of Maryland's most progressive
and respected communities preparing to continue its heritage
into another century
