A Brief History of
Waldorf, Maryland
America's Motorcross
Capitol, Waldorf, Maryland
The Smithsonian houses
America's national treasures and memorabilia. Its numerous
buildings, situated around the center of Washington D.C.,
display everything from the first color television to Apollo
rocket capsules. It is a breathtaking, mindboggling,
foot-numbing adventure for most Americans, but for the kid
in the No Fear T-shirt it was penance. "Come on, dad,
this is just a hunch of stupid old things," said the bored
teenager. "Let's head down to the track."
The track he was referring to sits about
an hour south of the Nation's Capital. While it may not be
as famous to most Americans as the Lincoln Memorial or the
Washington Monument, Budds Creek Raceway is Maryland's
biggest attraction for any self-respecting motocrosser.
I built the first track here in 1973 as a
practice track for my brother and me. I was 14 and he was
11," remembers Jonathan Beasley with a chuckle. "The track
we raced at was about 15 miles away, but it was shut down
for some reason. The club that ran events there came to my
parents and asked if they could start holding events at our
practice track. The property was already zoned for racing
because we had the drag strip and oval."
The Beasley family owned and operated a
drag strip and stock car oval just outside Waldorf,
Maryland. The family was having a great time running drags
and stock car races, but two younger family members caught
the motocross bug.
Jonathan's parents agreed to the club's
request. Jonathan was amazed when the club showed up with a
bulldozer and earth-moving equipment and transformed his
little practice track into a full-blown racecourse. The club
ran races on the course for the next three years. Jonathan,
at the tender age of 17, took over running the races in 1977
and has run them ever since.
